Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 47
Verse 3 of 9

What can't come with you

ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਚਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
maa-i-aa sanch raajay ahaNkaaree.
Gathering the wealth of Maya, kings become proud and arrogant.
ਮਾਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
maa-i-aa saath na chalai pi-aaree.
But this Maya that they love so much shall not go along with them in the end.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ॥
maa-i-aa mamtaa hai baho rangee.
There are so many colors and flavors of attachment to Maya.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਸੰਗੀ ॥੨॥
bin naavai ko saath na sangee. ||2||
Except for the Name, no one has any friend or companion. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Piling up wealth, kings grow proud and puffed up.

But the wealth they love so much does not go along with them in the end.

Clinging to things comes in so many colors.

Without the Naam, no one has a friend or companion.

The things you cling to can't follow you; only what you keep in your heart can.
The deeper layer

Wealth and pride stay behind; the Naam is the friend that goes with you.

Maa-i-aa sanch raajay ahaNkaaree: gathering wealth breeds pride, even in kings. None of it goes along in the end (na chalai pi-aaree), and clinging wears endless colors (baho rangee). Bin naavai ko saath na sangee: without the Naam, no one has a companion. The Naam is the one friend that lasts.

A Question to Sit With

If you could only carry one thing forward, what would you want it to be?
