Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 49
Verse 5 of 9

Don't let doubt spin you

ਏ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਮਰਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
ay bharam bhoolay marahu na ko-ee.
Do not be deluded by doubt; do not invite your own death.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
satgur sayv sadaa sukh ho-ee.
Serve the True Guru, and you shall be at peace forever.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
bin satgur mukat kinai na paa-ee.
Without the True Guru, no one is liberated.
ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥
aavahi jaaNhi mareh mar jaa-ee. ||4||
They come and go in reincarnation; they die, only to be reborn and die again. ||4||

In plain words

Don't let doubt fool you and lead you toward death.

Serve the True Guru, and you will have peace forever.

Without the True Guru, no one is set free.

People keep coming and going, round and round: they die, are born, and die again.

Doubt keeps you circling; a true thing to hold lets you finally rest.
The deeper layer

Doubt keeps you circling; serving the Guru brings lasting peace.

ay bharam bhoolay marahu na ko-ee — don't get lost in bharam, doubt, and let it lead you toward death. satgur sayv sadaa sukh ho-ee — serve the true Guru, and you will always have peace.

bin satgur mukat kinai na paa-ee — without the true Guru, no one finds mukat, freedom. Without it, people keep coming and going, round and round.

Think of a hamster on a wheel. It runs and runs but stays in the same spot. The verse gives a strong warning. But its main message is the peace that is waiting.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel unsure, what is one steady thing you can hold onto?
