Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 49
Verse 6 of 9

Serve the One with no mother or father

ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
ayhu sareer hai tarai gun Dhaat.
This body wanders, caught in the three dispositions.
ਇਸ ਨੋ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥
is no vi-aapai sog santaap.
It is afflicted by sorrow and suffering.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਹੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਾਈ ਨ ਬਾਪੁ ॥
so sayvhu jis maa-ee na baap.
So serve the One who has no mother or father.
ਵਿਚਹੁ ਚੂਕੈ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਰੁ ਆਪੁ ॥੫॥
vichahu chookai tisnaa ar aap. ||5||
Desire and selfishness shall depart from within. ||5||

In plain words

This body is caught by the three pulls of Maya, and gets pushed around.

Sorrow and pain take hold of it.

So serve the One who has no mother or father.

Then craving and selfishness leave you from within.

Turn toward what was never born and always is, and the endless wanting starts to quiet.
The deeper layer

Serve the One who was never born, and craving and selfishness leave from within.

ayhu sareer hai tarai gun Dhaat — this body is pulled around by the three gun, the three qualities of Maya. You can think of them as being dull, being restless, and being calm. is no vi-aapai sog santaap — this brings sorrow and pain.

True ease, called sahaj, lies beyond these three pulls. It is sometimes called the "fourth state." The three pulls cannot make it happen.

so sayvhu jis maa-ee na baap — so serve the One who has no mother or father, the One who was never born. vichahu chookai tisnaa ar aap — then tisnaa (craving) and aap (selfishness) leave from inside.

Think of a kite tugged three ways by the wind. When someone holds the string steady from the ground, the kite settles.

A Question to Sit With

What is something in your life that pulls you in different directions at once?
