Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 5
Verse 2 of 5

Whatever Happens Is the Flow

ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਰਬੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
ki-aa kahee-ai sarbay rahi-aa samaa-ay.
What can I say? You are permeating and pervading all.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo kichh vartai sabh tayree rajaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Whatever happens, is all by Your Will. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

What can I say? You are present in everything, everywhere.

Whatever happens moves in the flow of Your will.

You are woven through everything, and life moves in a flow I can join instead of fight.
The deeper layer

The One is in everything, and whatever happens moves in the One's will.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Ki-aa kahee-ai, sarbay rahi-aa samaa-ay: what can I say, when You permeate all? Jo kichh vartai sabh tayree rajaa-ay, whatever happens is all by Your Will. Rajaa-ay, like hukam, is the flow of existence, the way water runs downhill and seasons turn. Accepting it means moving with the way life already moves, and finding ease there, the way a swimmer goes with the current.

A Question to Sit With

When is it wiser to flow with something than to fight it?
