Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 51
Verse 7 of 9

Clean where it counts

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੂਠਾ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
antar joothaa ki-o such ho-ay.
If someone is false within his own self, then how can he be pure?
ਸਬਦੀ ਧੋਵੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਇ ॥
sabdee Dhovai virlaa ko-ay.
How rare are those who wash with the Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
gurmukh ko-ee sach kamaavai.
How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, live the Truth.
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
aavan jaanaa thaak rahaavai. ||6||
Their comings and goings in reincarnation are over and done. ||6||

In plain words

If I am false inside, how can I be pure?

Rare are those who wash themselves with the Word. Rare are those who face the Guru and live the Truth. For them, the coming and going of birth after birth is over.

Only being clean where it counts, deep inside, can bring the wandering to rest.
The deeper layer

Being clean starts deep inside you, where only honesty can wash.

Antar joothaa ki-o such ho-ay: if you are false within, how can you be pure? Washing the outside cannot reach that place. Sabdee Dhovai virlaa ko-ay: rare are those who wash with the Word. Gurmukh ko-ee sach kamaavai: rare are those who, facing the Guru, live the Truth. For them, aavan jaanaa, the coming and going of birth after birth, comes to rest.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between looking good on the outside and being honest on the inside?
