Verse 5 of 9

The Name above the ritual

ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਕੀਏ ॥
karam Dharam parabh mayrai kee-ay.
My God created religious rituals.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਕੀਏ ॥੪॥
naam vadaa-ee sir karmaaN kee-ay. ||4||
He placed the glory of the Naam above these rituals. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My Lord made the religious rites and duties.

And above all those rites, the Lord placed the glory of the Naam.

Rituals have their place, but the Name they point to sits above them all.
The deeper layer

Rituals have their place, and the Name sits above them.

The verse says karam Dharam parabh mayrai kee-ay: my Lord made the rites and duties. Karam and Dharam here mean religious acts and duties. Because the One made them, they are not looked down on. But naam vadaa-ee sir: the glory of the Name is placed on top of them all.

It is like a birthday card. The card is lovely, but what matters is the love it carries. Outer forms point toward inner remembrance. The same holds true in every tradition.

A Question to Sit With

What is a tradition or ritual you value, and what deeper thing might it be pointing toward?
