Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The four great gifts of life are in the hands of the True Guru.
When the first three are set aside, the fourth is given.
The best gift comes when you stop grabbing.
The verse says satgur kai vas chaar padaarath. The chaar padaarath are the four great aims of life that people have long spoken of. All four are in the True Guru's hands. Then teen samaa-ay ayk kirtaarath: when the first three are set aside, the fourth is gained. The fourth is freedom.
Like sahaj, natural ease, this freedom cannot be made by trying hard. Think of trying to catch a butterfly by grabbing. It flies off. Hold out an open hand, and it may land. The fourth gift arrives when the grip loosens.
What is something good that only seems to come when you stop chasing it?
