Says Nanak, the Guru has imparted this understanding;
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੮॥੬॥
naam binaa gat kinai na paa-ee. ||8||6||
without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, no one is emancipated. ||8||6||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Nanak says: the Guru has given me this understanding.
Without the Naam, no one is set free.
It comes down to one simple thing: without the Name, there's no true freedom.
Everything comes down to one thing: the Naam sets you free.
In the last line Guru Nanak says kaho naanak gur boojh bujhaa-ee: the Guru has given me this understanding. It is summed up in naam binaa gat kinai na paa-ee: without the Name, no one is freed.
Naam here is not just a word. It is living remembrance of the One. Think of a best friend's name. It is more than letters. It carries everything you share. That is how the Name works.
A Question to Sit With
If you had to keep just one simple truth close, what would you want it to be?
