It Arrives, It Is Not Grabbed

ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਉਪਾਇ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
poorai bhaag gur paa-ee-ai upaa-ay kitai na paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
By perfect destiny, the Guru is found. He cannot be found by any efforts.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥੭॥
satgur tay sahj oopjai ha-umai sabad jalaa-ay. ||7||
Through the True Guru, intuitive wisdom wells up; through the Word of the Shabad, egotism is burnt away. ||7||

In plain words

By perfect good fortune, the Guru is found. No clever effort of any kind can get there.

From the True Guru, an easy, natural calm wells up, and through the Shabad, the Guru's Word, ego is burned away.

You cannot grab this by trying hard; it arrives like a gift.
The deeper layer

No trick can grab the Guru; the Guru comes like a gift.

Poorai bhaag gur paa-ee-ai means "by full good fortune, the Guru is found." Good fortune here means grace. Upaa-ay kitai na paa-i-aa jaa-ay means "no trick or plan can get it." Upaa-ay means a clever scheme.

Satgur tay sahj oopjai means "from the True Guru, sahj rises up." Sahj is a natural, easy calm. You can't build it by force. Ha-umai sabad jalaa-ay means "the Word burns away ha-umai," the "me first" voice.

Think of the sun coming out after clouds. You can't pull the sun down. But when the clouds drift off, it is simply there. Grace works like that. It shines when what was blocking it is gone.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good that came to you when you stopped trying to force it?
