Verse 3 of 9

The Door Was There All Along

ਚੂਕਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੁ ॥
chookaa ga-on miti-aa anDhi-aar.
The cycle of reincarnation is ended, and darkness is dispelled.
ਗੁਰਿ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
gur dikhlaa-i-aa mukat du-aar.
The Guru has revealed the door of liberation.
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਦ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
har paraym bhagat man tan sad raataa.
My mind and body are forever imbued with loving devotion to the Lord.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਨਾਇਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
parabhoo janaa-i-aa tab hee jaataa. ||2||
Now I know God, because He has made me know Him. ||2||

In plain words

My endless coming and going has stopped, and the darkness is gone.

The Guru has shown me the door to freedom.

My mind and body are soaked forever in loving devotion to the One.

Now I know the One, because the One let me know.

The door to freedom was there all along; the Guru shows it.
The deeper layer

The door to freedom is close by, and the Guru shows where it is.

Chookaa ga-on means the coming and going, the endless going in circles, has stopped. Miti-aa anDhi-aar means the darkness is gone.

Gur dikhlaa-i-aa mukat du-aar means the Guru showed me the door to freedom. It was never far away. Think of being stuck in a dark room, feeling the walls. Then someone switches on the light, and the door was right beside you.

Now, man tan sad raataa: mind and body are always soaked in love for the One.

And the last line holds a quiet surprise: parabhoo janaa-i-aa tab hee jaataa. I knew the One only when the One let me know. Even knowing the One is a gift from the One.

A Question to Sit With

Has a door to something good ever been closer than you realized?
