Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Fire offerings, sacred feasts, hard trials of the body, worship,
and bathing at millions of holy places —
all the good of these comes from holding the One's lotus feet in the heart, even for an instant.
Remembering the Lord of the Universe, every task comes right.
One moment of love for the One in the heart holds all the good the grandest rituals reach for.
The verse lists big efforts people make to be holy. Hom and jag are fire offerings and sacred feasts. UraDh tap means hard practice with the body upside down. There is poojaa, worship, and kot tirath isnaan, millions of baths at holy places.
Then the turn: charan kamal nimakh ridai Dhaaray. Keep the One's lotus feet in your heart for a nimakh, one blink of an eye. That gives you everything those efforts were reaching for. Think of someone saving up for a giant gift, when a warm hug is what the other person wanted.
The verse is not making fun of anyone's worship. In the song just before this, the Guru points out empty ritual. Here he turns it positive: the shortcut is love. Gobind japat sabh kaaraj saaray: remembering the One, all things come right.
What matters more — a big show, or one true moment of love?
