In plain words

My Beloved, my mother and my father, is always near.

O my Friend and Companion, You are the One I lean on.

The One takes the servants by the hand and makes them the One's own.

Nanak says: I live by remembering the One, the Treasure of every good thing.

The One is mother, father, and best friend, always near.
The deeper layer

The One is as close as a mother, a father and a best friend, holding your hand.

Maat pitaa har pareetam nayraa means my Beloved is my mother and father, always near. Meet saajan bharvaasaa tayraa means You are my friend and companion, the One I trust.

Kar geh leenay apunay daas means the One takes the servant by the hand and makes them the One's own. Think of a parent holding a small child's hand while crossing a busy street.

And jap jeevai naanak guntaas. Nanak comes alive by remembering the guntaas, the treasure of every good thing. This is oneness at its most gentle: not far away, but holding your hand.

A Question to Sit With

Who feels like mother, father, and best friend all at once to you?
