The light of the One has come up, and the darkness is gone.
Thinking deeply on the One, I have found the jewel of the Naam.
Light comes up inside you, the darkness goes, and quiet thinking on the One uncovers a jewel.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad, the line the singer comes back to again and again.
Pargatee jot miti-aa anDhi-aaraa means a light has come up, and the darkness is gone. Jot means light. This is the oldest picture of what a true teacher does: bring you out of the dark into the light.
Raam ratan paa-i-aa karat beechaaraa means by thinking deeply and quietly, I found the jewel of the Naam. Ratan means jewel, and beechaaraa means careful thinking.
But notice: the thinking did not make the jewel. The jewel was there all along. Quiet thinking only cleared away what was hiding it. Think of a muddy glass of water. Let it sit still, and the mud settles. Soon you can see right to the bottom.
When has something you were looking for turned out to have been near you the whole time?
