Where Joy Lives, Pain Cannot Stay

ਜਹ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਪਇਆਨਾ ॥
jah anand dukh door pa-i-aanaa.
Pain runs far away from that place where there is bliss.
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਕੁ ਲਿਵ ਤਤੁ ਲੁਕਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
man maanak liv tat lukaanaa. ||2||
The jewel of the mind is focused and attuned to the essence of reality. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Where there is joy, pain runs far away.

The jewel of my mind is tuned in, resting in the deepest truth.

A mind resting in what is true leaves pain very little room to stay.
The deeper layer

Pain cannot stay where joy lives.

Jah anand dukh door pa-i-aanaa means where there is anand, deep joy, dukh, pain, runs far away. Kabir is not saying you beat pain away by force. He is telling us what happens by itself.

Man maanak liv tat lukaanaa means the jewel of the mind, the man maanak, is tuned in and rests in the tat. Liv means loving attention. Tat means the deepest truth, what lies underneath everything.

Pain feeds on a mind that is scattered and jumpy. Think of a phone with a hundred apps open, getting hot and slow. Close them, and it cools down. When the mind finds its true resting place, pain loses the ground it stood on.

A Question to Sit With

Where does your mind feel most calm and steady?
