In plain words

The Guru is a river whose water is always pure. Meeting it washes away the dirt of a muddled, unkind mind.

Finding the True Guru is the perfect bath. It turns even beasts and ghosts into shining beings.

No one is too rough or too lost to be washed clean.
The deeper layer

The Guru is a clean river that can wash any mind.

Gur daree-aa-o sadaa jal nirmal means "the Guru is a river, and its water is always pure." It washes away durmat mail. Durmat means bad or muddled thinking, and mail means dirt. So it rinses off the grime of tangled, unkind thoughts.

Satgur paa-i-ai pooraa naavan means "finding the True Guru is the complete bath." It is so complete that pasoo paraytahu dayv karai: "it turns even beasts and ghosts into shining beings."

Think of a muddy soccer uniform. It looks ruined. Then it comes out of the wash bright and clean. No one is too rough or too lost to be washed clean like that. Anyone can change, and everyone gets the same chance. That is the heart of the teaching.

A Question to Sit With

Do you believe anyone can change for the better? Why or why not?
