Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Do not say the Vedas, the Bible and the Koran are false. The one who is false is the one who never thinks them through.
You say the One, Khudaa, is in all — so why do you kill a chicken?
Every holy book deserves honor; what goes wrong is a heart that never thinks its words through.
Kabir will not call any holy book false. The Vedas (the old Hindu holy books), the Bible, the Koran: he honors them all. Jhoothay jhoothaa jo na bichaarai — the one who is false is the person who never thinks the words through.
Then he asks a sharp question. If you say the One lives in everyone, ki-o murgee maarai — why kill a chicken? The same life shines inside it too.
Think of a poster in class that says "Be kind to everyone." It only means something if people are kind. Kabir is not aiming at one faith. He is pointing at the gap between what we say and what we do.
How does believing something is precious change the way you treat it?
