Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Only my own mind knows what is going on inside it. So I tell it to the Knowing One.
I chant the Naam of the One who knows every heart from the inside. Why should I be afraid?
You can bring your heart, just as it is, to the One who already knows it.
Bhagat Namdev starts with a bit of quiet honesty. Man kee birthaa man hee jaanai means "only the mind knows the mind's own ache." Nobody else can see inside you the way you can.
So he carries that ache, unhidden, to the boojhal, the Knowing One. That One is the antarjaamee, which means "the one who knows the inside of every heart."
Then comes the turn: mai dar kaisay chahee-ai, "why should I be afraid?" Think of telling your mom about a broken vase, and finding out she already knew and still hugged you. When someone knows you completely and loves you anyway, there is nothing left to hide. And with nothing to hide, there is nothing to fear. Raam ravaaN-ee means "I chant the One's Naam." Chanting keeps you close, in your thoughts, to the One who already sees all of you.
How would it feel to bring your messiest thoughts to someone who loves you no matter what?
