The Scent That Spreads

ਬਾਵਨ ਬੀਖੂ ਬਾਨੈ ਬੀਖੇ ਬਾਸੁ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਲਾਗਿਲਾ ॥
baavan beekhoo baanai beekhay baas tay sukh laagilaa.
The beautiful fragrance of sandalwood emanates from the sandalwood tree, and attaches to the other trees of the forest.
ਸਰਬੇ ਆਦਿ ਪਰਮਲਾਦਿ ਕਾਸਟ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਭੈਇਲਾ ॥੨॥
sarbay aad paramlaad kaasat chandan bhai-ilaa. ||2||
God, the Primal Source of everything, is like the sandalwood tree; He transforms us woody trees into fragrant sandalwood. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The sweet smell of the sandalwood tree drifts out and clings to the other trees of the forest.

The One, the Source of everything, is like that sandalwood tree. The One turns us plain wooden trees into fragrant sandalwood too.

Stay close to the One and something ordinary in you slowly turns fragrant and beautiful.
The deeper layer

Stay near the One, and the plain wood in you turns fragrant.

Baavan beekhoo is the sandalwood tree. Its sweet smell, its baas, drifts out to the trees around it. Namdev says the One is that fragrant tree, the aad, the Source of everything. Kaasat chandan bhai-ilaa means "plain wood becomes sandalwood."

The change comes from nearness. Think of a sweater that smells of wood smoke after an evening by the campfire. You did nothing but sit close.

A Question to Sit With

Who makes you a little kinder just by being near them?
