A Wonder Too Deep to Say

ਅਚਰਜੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
achraj kichh kahan na jaa-ee.
This thing is wonderful and amazing! It cannot be described.
ਬਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
basat agochar bhaa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
It is an unfathomable object, O Siblings of Destiny! ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This is so wonderful, so amazing, that it cannot be described.

It is beyond anything the senses can reach, my brothers and sisters.

The most wonderful things are the ones too big for words.
The deeper layer

Some wonders are too deep for words.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Achraj kichh kahan na jaa-ee — it is so wonderful that it cannot be described. Basat agochar bhaa-ee — it is a thing beyond the reach of the senses, brothers and sisters. Bhaa-ee means sibling, a warm way of speaking to everyone.

This is the feeling of vismaad, deep awe. Think of seeing the night sky far from city lights. You just stand there, quiet and amazed. That awe sits at the root of the word Waheguru, "Wonderful Lord."

A Question to Sit With

Has anything ever amazed you so much you couldn't explain it?
