Sikhism·Raag Raamkalee·Shabad 22
Verse 3 of 5

No Price, No Description

ਮੋਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
mol naahee kachh karnai jogaa ki-aa ko kahai sunaavai.
Its value cannot be estimated at all; what can anyone say about it?
ਕਥਨ ਕਹਣ ਕਉ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੋ ਪੇਖੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਣਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥
kathan kahan ka-o sojhee naahee jo paykhai tis ban aavai. ||2||
By speaking and describing it, it cannot be understood; only one who sees it realizes it. ||2||

In plain words

No one can put a price on it. What can anyone say about it?

Talking and describing cannot make you understand it. Only the one who sees it comes to know it.

Some things you can only understand by experiencing them yourself.
The deeper layer

You cannot price it or describe it. You can only see it for yourself.

Mol naahee kachh karnai jogaa — no price can be put on it. Ki-aa ko kahai sunaavai — what can anyone say about it? Words can point toward it, but they cannot hold it.

Jo paykhai tis ban aavai — only the one who sees it comes to know it. Think of trying to explain the taste of a mango to someone who has never had one. You can talk all day. One bite says more. Words point the way. Seeing for yourself is how you arrive.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you had to feel for yourself before you understood it?
