O Lord God, please be kind to me, that I may hear with my ears Your Sublime and Exalted Sermon.

My cycle of coming and going is finally completed, and I have attained peace and tranquility. ||1||

In plain words

Be kind to me, and let my ears take in the beautiful telling of You.

The long, tiring round of coming and going came to its rest, and I found peace and a place to lay my head.

Deep listening can settle a life that keeps going back and forth.
The deeper layer

Listening closely brings the restless back-and-forth of life to rest.

Ootam kathaa suneejai sarvanee means "let my ears hear the highest telling." It asks for deep listening — what Japji Sahib calls suniai — not just hearing sounds. Think of the difference between music in the background and a song you stop everything to hear.

Aavat jaat do-oo pakh pooran means the coming and going is complete. It is a picture of a restless, back-and-forth life finally going quiet. What is left is sukh bisraam, peace and rest.

A Question to Sit With

When you listen — not just hear — what changes for you?
