The Essence I Found

ਸੋਧਤ ਸੋਧਤ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੇਸਟ ਪੂਰੀ ॥
soDhat soDhat tat beechaari-o bhagat saraysat pooree.
Searching and searching, I have realized the essence of reality: devotional worship is the most sublime fulfillment.
kaho naanak ik raam naam bin avar sagal biDh ooree. ||2||62||85||
Says Nanak, without the Name of the One Lord, all other ways are imperfect. ||2||62||85||

In plain words

I searched and searched, and at last I found the heart of the matter: loving devotion is the fullest, finest thing there is.

Nanak says: without the one Naam of the One, every other road stays unfinished.

After all the searching, love turns out to be the essence.
The deeper layer

After a long search, the heart of it all comes clear: loving devotion is the fullest thing there is.

SoDhat soDhat tat beechaari-o means searching and searching, I found the essence. Tat means the core, like the seed at the center of a fruit. And the core is bhagat, loving devotion. The verse calls it saraysat, the finest, and pooree, complete.

The closing line says every other way is ooree, unfinished, without the One Name. The point is not to put down other roads. It is to name what makes any road whole. Think of a puzzle with one piece missing. Everything else can be perfect, but the picture only feels done when that last piece clicks in.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you searched a long time for before you understood it?
