Please be merciful to me, O my Enticing Beloved Lord, and erase the record of my doubts. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A life counts as life only when it sees the One.

Be kind to me, dear Beloved who wins every heart, and rub out the line of my doubts.

There is a difference between breathing and being wide awake.
The deeper layer

Life counts as life when you see the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jeevan ta-o ganee-ai har paykhaa — life counts as life only when the One is seen. Just breathing isn't yet really living. Think of walking to school staring at your phone, then looking up and seeing a beautiful sunrise. Suddenly you are awake.

Manmohan means the One who wins every heart. The prayer asks Him to for bharam kee raykhaa: rub out the line of doubt, like erasing a smudge. Doubt is what stands between a person and clear, wide-awake seeing.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel most awake and alive?
