More Than Words

ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਉਪਜਤ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਸਾਸ ਕਿਆ ਸੇਖਾਂ ॥
kahat sunat kichh saaNt na upjat bin bisaas ki-aa saykhaaN.
By speaking and listening, tranquility and peace are not found at all. What can anyone learn without faith?
parabhoo ti-aag aan jo chaahat taa kai mukh laagai kaalaykhaa. ||1||
One who renounces God and longs for another - his face is blackened with filth. ||1||

In plain words

Just talking about it and just hearing about it do not bring the deep calm.

Without inner trust, what can anyone learn? The words stay up on the surface.

And someone who turns away from the One to chase something empty loses their way in the shadows.

Words only go deep when there is trust underneath them.
The deeper layer

Words bring peace only when there is trust underneath them.

Kahat sunat kichh saant na upjat — talking and listening alone don't grow peace. Bisaas means trust, a deep inner sureness. That is what lets the words land. This isn't against learning or listening. It is about words that never reach the heart. Think of reading the rules of swimming without ever getting in the pool.

The old verse says the face of someone who leaves the One for other things turns black with dirt. In simple words: turning from the One toward empty things makes a life grow dim. That dimming comes naturally. It isn't a curse put on anyone.

A Question to Sit With

When has something you only knew in words finally become something you trusted deep down?
