Carry Me Across

Please save me, O All-powerful Lord God, O Great Giver; O God, You are Inaccessible and Infinite.

naanak daas tayree sarnaa-ee bhavjal utri-o paar. ||2||79||102||
Slave Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary, to cross over the terrible world-ocean, and reach the other shore. ||2||79||102||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Hold me safe, You who can do anything and give everything, so vast that I could never reach the edge of You.

Nanak says: I, Your servant, have come into Your shelter, and crossed the wide, rough sea of life to the far shore.

You don't cross the rough water by your own strength — you are carried.
The deeper layer

Sammrith daatay is the all-powerful Giver; agam apaar, beyond reach and without limit. Bhavjal, the world-ocean, is the sea of restless life; sarnaa-ee, the shelter that carries one across. The wandering of the middle verse resolves not in one's own effort but in being carried, being held.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone stronger helped you through something too big to handle alone?
