Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 13
Verse 2 of 3

In Every Heart, In Every Place

har ghat ghatay ghat bastaa har jal thalay har bastaa har thaan thaanantar bastaa mai har daykhan ko chaa-o.
The Lord dwells in the home of each and every heart. The Lord dwells in the water, and the Lord dwells on the land. The Lord dwells in the spaces and interspaces. I have such a great longing to see the Lord.
ko-ee aavai santo har kaa jan santo mayraa pareetam jan santo mohi maarag dikhlaavai.
If only some Saint, some humble Saint of the Lord, my Holy Beloved, would come, to show me the way.
tis jan kay ha-o mal mal Dhovaa paa-o. ||1||
I would wash and massage the feet of that humble being. ||1||

In plain words

The One lives in every single heart, in the water and on the land, filling every space between — and oh, how I long to see it.

If only one of the Guru's people, a saint of the One, would come and show me the way. I would gladly wash the dust from their feet.

The One is in every heart and every place — the longing is just to see it.
The deeper layer

har ghat ghatay, in each and every heart; jal thalay, in water and on land; thaan thaanantar, in every space — the One is everywhere, and yet the heart still aches with chaa-o, longing, to see it. The humble wish to wash a guide's feet is Guru Ram Das's recurring image of devotion. Omnipresence and longing sit side by side, the signature of Saarang.

A Question to Sit With

If the One is everywhere, where might you look for it today?
