Lifted Out of the Dark

ਤਿਆਗਿ ਗੋੁਪਾਲ ਅਵਰ ਜੋ ਕਰਣਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਖੂਹ ॥
ti-aag gopaal avar jo karnaa tay bikhi-aa kay khooh.
To abandon the Lord of the World, and become involved with anything else, is to fall into the pit of corruption.
ਦਰਸ ਪਿਆਸ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਕਾਢੀ ਨਰਕ ਤੇ ਧੂਹ ॥੧॥
daras pi-aas mayraa man mohi-o kaadhee narak tay Dhooh. ||1||
My mind is enticed, thirsty for the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. He has lifted me up and out of hell. ||1||

In plain words

When I turn away from the One and pour myself into things that cannot fill me, I end up in a dark, stuck place — like the bottom of a deep pit.

But the longing to see the One pulled at my heart, and that longing lifted me right up out of the darkness into the light. I did not climb out alone; I was reached for.

The very longing to see the One is what lifts you out of the dark.
The deeper layer

bikhi-aa kay khooh is the well, or pit, of corruption: the trapped feeling of chasing what cannot satisfy. narak is best heard as the darkest, most stuck state a heart can fall into — and then comes the rescue, kaadhee... dhooh, lifted out. What does the lifting is daras pi-aas, the thirst to see the One. Even our longing is grace at work.

A Question to Sit With

When you have felt stuck in a low place, what was it that finally reached in and lifted you?
