Seeking One Sight

ਸਾਰਗ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
saarag mehlaa 5.
Saarang, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਨਿ ਬਿਰਾਗੈਗੀ ॥ ਖੋਜਤੀ ਦਰਸਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
man biraagaigee. khojtee darsaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My mind is neutral and detached; I seek only the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My heart has grown quiet and unhurried, no longer pulled this way and that.

There is only one thing it looks for now: to see the One I love.

A quiet heart is not an empty heart; it is one that has found what it wants.
The deeper layer

A heart grows quiet once it knows what it wants.

In the original, the seeking voice is a woman's: the soul longing for her Beloved. This is the "pause" line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. Biraag means a calm letting-go of other things. It does not come from being cold. It comes from finally knowing what the heart truly wants: darsaar, a sight of the One.

Think of a kid at the airport, waiting for a grandparent to land. The shops and screens don't pull at them. They only watch the arrivals gate.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to want only one thing, calmly and completely?
