Verse 3 of 3

No Rank, No Labels

ਨਹ ਬਰਨ ਬਰਨ ਨਹ ਕੁਲਹ ਕੁਲ ॥
nah baran baran nah kulah kul.
You have no caste or social class, no ancestry or family.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਤੂ ॥੨॥੯॥੧੩੮॥
naanak parabh kirpaal too. ||2||9||138||
Nanak: God, You are Merciful. ||2||9||138||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You belong to no caste and no class, no family line and no rank — You are above every label people invent.

Nanak says: You are endlessly kind.

The source of everything belongs to no rank at all.
The deeper layer

The One has no caste, no class, and no family rank.

Nah baran baran nah kulah kul means "no caste, no class, no family line." Caste is an old system that sorted people into higher and lower groups by birth. The verse puts the One outside every one of these sortings.

That quietly takes away their ground. If the Source of everything has no rank, then rank cannot be what matters most. Think of a school where some kids get the best seats just because of who their grandparents were. That would feel wrong, and it is. Every one of us comes from the same Source. And the One is endlessly kind.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think people invent ranks and labels for each other?
