The Saint, the slave of the Lord is saved; the noose of the Messenger of Death is snapped. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the Purifier of sinners; O Nanak, remember Him in meditation. ||2||10||139||3||13||155||

In plain words

The saints, the One's own people, are lifted clear — the tangle that once bound them is cut loose, and they are free.

The Naam lifts up anyone, no matter how far they have drifted. Nanak says: remember it, and keep it close.

No one has drifted so far that the Name cannot lift them free.
The deeper layer

No one has drifted too far to be lifted back.

The verse speaks of jam kee faas, the snare of Death's messenger. It is an old picture of a trap that holds a person tight. Here the trap is cut, and the person walks free. Think of a kite string caught in a tree, and someone gently cutting it loose. The feeling is coming home, not being scared.

Patit paavan means the Name lifts up those who have fallen or drifted away. However far someone has gone, they are never out of its reach. So Guru Arjan says: keep the Name close, and remember it.

A Question to Sit With

When you have felt tangled up in something, what helped you get free?
