Shade of a Passing Cloud

kaaN ko tan Dhan sampat kaaN kee kaa si-o nayhu lagaahee.
Who has a body? Who has wealth and property? With whom should we fall in love?
jo deesai so sagal binaasai ji-o baadar kee chhaahee. ||1||
Whatever is seen, shall all disappear, like the shade of a passing cloud. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whose body is this? Whose wealth, whose things? What should you fasten your heart to?

Everything you can see will pass away — like the shadow of a cloud sliding across the ground, here one moment and gone the next.

What you can see is passing; choose carefully what your heart holds.
The deeper layer

Jio baadar kee chhaahee — like the shadow of a passing cloud. Everything visible slides by. So what, if anything, is worth fastening the heart to?

A Question to Sit With

If most things pass away like a cloud's shadow, what would you want your heart to hold onto?
