In plain words

Without the One, how could my mind ever be at rest?

But when Truth takes root inside me, the weight of countless old mistakes lifts, and the tiring round of chasing and losing finally comes to a stop.

The restless mind is searching for one thing.
The deeper layer

Without the One, how can my mind ever be at peace?

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. Dheerai means comforted, steadied. The mind is restless in a deep way, and it settles only in the One. Think of a compass needle that keeps swinging until it finds north. Then it holds still.

Saach drirh-aa-ay means Truth planted firmly inside. When that happens, the ache of kot kalap — countless ages — is lifted. The long round of coming back again and again, being born over and over, ends too. It is like a tiring game of chasing and losing that finally stops.

A Question to Sit With

What are you looking for when your mind will not settle?
