Linked to the Name

ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਏ ॥
sachaa sach daataa karam biDhaataa jis bhaavai tis naa-ay laa-ay.
The True Lord is the True Giver, the Architect of Destiny; as He pleases, He links mortals to the Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੪॥
guroo du-aarai so-ee boojhai jis no aap bujhaa-ay. ||4||
He alone comes to understand, who enters the Guru's Gate, whom the Lord Himself instructs. ||4||

In plain words

The One is the true Giver, the shaper of how things unfold, and it draws each heart to the Name in its own good time.

Understanding comes to the one who steps through the Guru's door, the one the One itself teaches from within.

You are drawn toward what matters in its own good time.
The deeper layer

The One is the true Giver, and understanding comes as the One's own gift.

Sachaa sach daataa — the true, true Giver. Karam bidhaataa — the One who shapes how things unfold. Jis bhaavai tis naa-ay laa-ay — as the One pleases, the One links each heart to the Name.

Guroo du-aarai so-ee boojhai — understanding comes through the Guru's door. It comes to the one whom the One awakens from within.

So it is grace, not cleverness. Think of a seed in spring. It cannot make itself grow by trying hard. The sun and rain wake it up, and then it opens.

A Question to Sit With

Has something important come to you only when you were finally ready for it?
