It Is All the One's Doing

ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥

He Himself is the Gurmukh, and He Himself gives; He Himself creates and beholds.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਥਾਇ ਪਏ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak say jan thaa-ay pa-ay hai jin kee pat paavai laykhai. ||8||3||
O Nanak, those humble beings are approved, whose honor the Lord Himself accepts. ||8||3||

In plain words

It is the One that opens a heart, the One that gives, the One that makes and watches over everything — all of it, its own doing.

Nanak says: the humble hearts it welcomes are counted as true, their worth recognized by the One itself.

The good in you is the One working through you.
The deeper layer

It is all the One's own doing, and the One's welcome is what counts.

Aapay gurmukh aapay dayvai — the One is the awakened heart, and the One is also the Giver. Aapay kar kar vaykhai — the One makes everything and watches over it. Everything goes back to grace. Nothing goes to the ego's credit.

Say jan thaa-ay pa-ay — those people are accepted. Jin kee pat paavai laykhai — the One Itself recognizes their honor.

What counts is the One's welcome, not our trophies. Think of a grandparent who opens the door with a big hug. You did not earn that hug. It was simply given, because you belong.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a good thing in your life you did not make happen on your own?
