Light Dawning in the Mind

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ॥
sadaa sadaa satgur namaskaar.
Forever and ever, humbly bow to the True Guru.
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
gur kirpaa tay gun gaa-ay apaar.
By Guru's Grace, sing the Glorious Praises of the Infinite Lord.
ਮਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
man bheetar hovai pargaas.
His Light shall radiate deep within your mind.
ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
gi-aan anjan agi-aan binaas. ||1||
With the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom, ignorance is dispelled. ||1||

In plain words

Bow to the Guru, again and again, and something opens up. By the Guru's grace you begin to sing about the One who has no end, and as you do, a soft brightness wakes up inside your mind.

It is like wiping a fog from your eyes. Wisdom is the gentle ointment, and the moment it touches you, not-knowing simply fades and you can see.

When you bow to the Guru, a quiet light wakes up in your mind.
The deeper layer

Bowing to the satgur, the Guru, is where the singing begins. gian anjan is the ointment of wisdom applied to the eye, so that agian, not-knowing, fades away (binaas). pargaas, light waking inside the mind, is a recurring image in Gurbani for understanding that dawns quietly rather than being argued into place.

A Question to Sit With

What helps the fog clear when you finally understand something you had been confused about?
