Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 166
Verse 11 of 13

Countless Ways the One Plays

ਅਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਲਖੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
anik maa-i-aa jaa kee lakhee na jaa-ay.
Many Mayas, which cannot be known.
ਅਨਿਕ ਕਲਾ ਖੇਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
anik kalaa khaylai har raa-ay.
Many are the ways in which our Sovereign Lord plays.
ਅਨਿਕ ਧੁਨਿਤ ਲਲਿਤ ਸੰਗੀਤ ॥
anik Dhunit lalit sangeet.
Many exquisite melodies sing of the Lord.
ਅਨਿਕ ਗੁਪਤ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਤਹ ਚੀਤ ॥੧੦॥
anik gupat pargatay tah cheet. ||10||
Many recording scribes of the conscious and subconscious are revealed there. ||10||

In plain words

Countless ways the great play of life unfolds, more than anyone could ever figure out. Countless beautiful melodies rising up.

And every thought you have ever had — the loud ones and the quiet hidden ones — the One already knows them all.

Every thought you have ever had — loud or hidden — the One already knows.
The deeper layer

The One plays in countless ways, and knows every thought, the loud ones and the quiet ones.

Maa-i-aa, the changing world, shows up in countless forms no one can fully read. Har raa-ay, the Sovereign One, is at play in all of them, like an artist with endless ideas. And there is lalit sangeet, beautiful music, everywhere.

Then the verse speaks of the record keepers who note every thought, open and hidden. Old stories called them Chitr and Gupt. We can keep just the tender part: the One already knows every thought you have.

That is not a courtroom to be scared of. It is like a parent who knows you so well they can tell how you feel before you say a word. Being fully known is a kind of comfort.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to imagine being completely known, even your quietest thoughts?
