Sikhism·Raag Saarang·Shabad 167
Verse 2 of 4

Nothing Goes With You but the One

ka-un upmaa day-o kavan badaa-ee.
What praises should I give, and what approval should I offer to Him?
pooran poor rahi-o sarab thaa-ee.
The Perfect Lord is totally pervading and permeating all places.
pooran manmohan ghat ghat sohan jab khinchai tab chhaa-ee.
The Perfect Enticing Lord adorns each and every heart. When He withdraws, the mortal turns to dust.
ki-o na aaraaDhahu mil kar saaDhahu gharee muhtak baylaa aa-ee.
Why do you not worship and adore Him? Join together with the Holy Saints; any instant, your time shall come.
arath darab sabh jo kichh deesai sang na kachhhoo jaa-ee.
All your property and wealth, and all that you see - none of it will go along with you.
kaho naanak har har aaraaDhahu kavan upmaa day-o kavan badaa-ee. ||2||
Says Nanak, worship and adore the Lord, Har, Har. What praise, and what approval, can I offer to Him? ||2||

In plain words

What could I ever say that is grand enough? The One completely fills every place there is. It wins every heart and makes each one beautiful; and when the breath of life is gently drawn back, the body returns quietly to the earth.

So why wait to hold the One close? Come together with holy people and do it now — the right moment always arrives sooner than you think. All your things, all your money, everything you can see and touch — none of it travels on with you. Only the One stays. Nanak says: keep the One in your heart, always. What praise could ever be big enough?

Nothing you own travels on with you — so hold the One close, starting now.
The deeper layer

kaun upmaa — what praise could ever be big enough? pooran poor rahi-o, the One fills every place. manmohan, the heart-winner, adorns each heart; jab khinchai tab chhaa-ee — when the breath of life is drawn back, the body returns quietly to the earth. The call is aaraadhahu: hold the One close, together with the saadh, the holy people, now — for arath darab, wealth and things, travels on with no one.

A Question to Sit With

If you could only keep things you cannot hold in your hands, what would you keep?
