What Is the One I Love Like?

He is liberated from bondage, joined to each and every heart. I cannot say what the Lord is like.

Gazing upon His wondrous play, O Nanak, my mind is fascinated. I humbly ask, what is my Lord and Master like? ||3||

In plain words

I go to the saints and ask: what is the One I love like? I would give my whole heart to anyone who could bring me news of it.

Tell me — where does the One who wins every heart live? It gives comfort to every part of me, filling every place, every land, every space in between. It is completely free, and at the same time it is woven into each and every heart. Honestly, there are no words big enough to say what it is like.

Nanak says: watching the wonder of all it does, my mind is spellbound, and still I keep asking, softly: what is this One I love like?

Sometimes the truest answer to what is it like is a happy I cannot put it into words.
The deeper layer

A seeker asks the sants what the Beloved is like, offering the heart for any sadesaa, any news, of Mohan, the One who enchants every heart. The answer piles up — giver of comfort to every limb, filling all places, free of bondage yet joined to each heart — and then lands in a glad surrender: kahi na saka-o, I cannot say what the One is like. Here the limit of words becomes wonder, not defeat.

A Question to Sit With

What is something wonderful that you have never been able to fully explain to anyone?
