The Prayer the Giver Heard

salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
sabhay jee-a samaal apnee mihar kar.
In Your Mercy, You care for all beings and creatures.
ann paanee much upaa-ay dukh daalad bhann tar.
You produce corn and water in abundance; You eliminate pain and poverty, and carry all beings across.
ardaas sunee daataar ho-ee sisat thar.
The Great Giver listened to my prayer, and the world has been cooled and comforted.
layvhu kanth lagaa-ay apdaa sabh har.
Take me into Your Embrace, and take away all my pain.
naanak naam Dhi-aa-ay parabh kaa safal ghar. ||1||
Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the House of God is fruitful and prosperous. ||1||

In plain words

There is a care that reaches every living being — feeding everyone, sending the rain and the grain, easing pain and want. Nothing that breathes is left out.

And when a heartfelt prayer is offered, the Giver hears it, and the whole world grows cool and comforted, like relief after a long hot day. You are gathered up close, your troubles lifted — held in an embrace that leaves no one out. Nanak says: keep the Naam in your heart; the One's home always bears fruit.

A care wide enough to feed everything also has room to hold you close.
The deeper layer

Shalok, Fifth Mehl. sabhay jee-a samaal — the Giver cares for all beings; produces grain and water in abundance and breaks pain and poverty (dukh daalad). ardaas sunee — the prayer is heard, and the world is cooled and comforted (sisat thar). layvhu kanth lagaa-ay — the tender image of being taken into an embrace, all trouble removed. safal ghar — the House of God is fruitful.

A Question to Sit With

When has relief come to you like a cool breeze after a long, hot day?
