Nanak says: a rinse of the mouth cleans you only if you know what cleansing is. For a thoughtful person, washing is wisdom. For someone seeking, it is self-mastery.
For the gentle-hearted, it is being content. For a person raising a family, it is honesty and generosity. For a leader, it is fairness. For a student, it is steady, focused attention. Plain water can quench your thirst, but it can never wash your mind clean — that takes something deeper. Water gives life to the whole world, and one day water carries it all away again.
First Mehl. Ritual rinsing (chulee) is reframed: real purification differs by role — wisdom (gi-aan), self-control (jat), contentment (santokh), truth and charity (sat, daan), justice (ni-aav), true meditation (sach dhi-aan). Water washes the body, not the consciousness (paanee chit na dhopee) — an evenhanded critique of empty ritual across social roles.
What is a clean-up that is not about soap and water at all?
