Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When you turn toward the Guru, peace rises up inside your heart, and the Naam springs to life there on its own. All the practices people do — quiet meditation, self-discipline, journeys to holy places — find their worth when they please the One.
So serve with a clean and open heart, and let your voice sing the goodness you see; it makes you shine. This is what the One loves. It is what carries you gently across life's waters. Nanak says the One draws close those who turn to the Guru and makes them beautiful at the One's door.
Peace grows in the heart that turns to the Guru, and love is what gives every practice its worth.
It is a pauri, one of the main verses of this Vaar, this long song. Gurmukh hirdai saant hai — in the heart of the gurmukh, the one turned toward the Guru, there is peace. Naa-o ugav aa-i-aa — the Naam springs up inside, like a seed sprouting.
Jap tap tirath sanjam — repeating prayers, hard practices, visiting holy places, self-control. These find their worth when they please the One, prabh bhaa-i-aa. Love is what makes them count.
Hirdaa sudh har sayvday — serve the One with a clean heart. Singing the One's goodness makes a person sohai, beautiful. Har dar sohaa-i-aa — they shine in the One's court, close in the One's presence. Think of a song sung by a kid who means every word. It may be simple, but it lights up the whole room.
What is a practice that only means something when you do it with love?
