Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone with plenty will often still say, "I just need a little more" — and the wanting never quite stops, no matter how much is piled up.

Nanak says he is poor on the day he forgets the Naam. That is the one poor day — the day you lose touch with what holds you. Keep the Naam close, and you are rich no matter what your pockets hold.

The one poverty is losing touch with the Naam that holds you.
The deeper layer

The Naam is the wealth that matters; forgetting it is the one poverty.

Dhanvantaa iv hee kahai avree dhan ka-o jaa-o — the wealthy person keeps saying, "I should go and get more." Nirdhan tit din jit din visrai naa-o — poor on the day the Naam is forgotten. Riches are measured inside. Remembering the Naam keeps a person rich.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a person rich, apart from the amount of money they have?
