Every Day Is Precious

First Mehl:
sooraj charhai vijog sabhsai ghatai aarjaa.
The sun rises and sets, and the lives of all run out.

The mind and body experience pleasures; one loses, and another wins.
sabh ko bhari-aa fook aakhan kahan na thamH-ee-ai.
Everyone is puffed up with pride; even after they are spoken to, they do not stop.
naanak vaykhai aap fook kadhaa-ay dheh pavai. ||2||
O Nanak, the Lord Himself sees all; when He takes the air out of the balloon, the body falls. ||2||

In plain words

Every time the sun rises and sets, a day of life quietly passes — which is exactly why each day is so precious. Some days feel like winning and some like losing, but all of them are gifts.

It is easy to get puffed up with pride, like a balloon filling with air, so full of ourselves that we forget how light and passing it all is. Nanak says the One sees it all, and when the air slips out, the balloon simply settles back down — a gentle reminder to stay humble, grateful, and awake to the time we are given.

Each passing day is a gift — enough reason to stay humble and awake to it.
The deeper layer

Every day that passes is precious, so there is no room for puffed-up pride.

Sooraj charhai vijog sabhsai ghatai aarjaa — each time the sun comes up and goes down, a little of everyone's life is spent. That makes each day a treasure to use well. Sabh ko bhari-aa fook — everyone is puffed up with air. Fook kadhaa-ay dheh pavai — when the air is let out, the balloon comes down. Staying humble and grateful keeps you light.

A Question to Sit With

If each day is a gift, what is one way you'd want to use today?
