A Beautiful Outside Is Not Enough

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਗੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਣਾਈ ॥
garheh kaa-i-aa seegaar baho bhaaNt banaa-ee.
The fortress of the body has been decorated and adorned in so many ways.

The wealthy wear beautiful silk robes of various colors.
ਲਾਲ ਸੁਪੇਦ ਦੁਲੀਚਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਸਭਾ ਬਣਾਈ ॥

They hold elegant and beautiful courts, on red and white carpets.
ਦੁਖੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਭੋਗਣਾ ਗਰਬੈ ਗਰਬਾਈ ॥
dukh khaanaa dukh bhognaa garbai garbaa-ee.
But they eat in pain, and in pain they seek pleasure; they are very proud of their pride.

naanak naam na chayti-o ant la-ay chhadaa-ee. ||24||
O Nanak, the mortal does not even think of the Name, which shall deliver him in the end. ||24||

In plain words

A person can decorate the body in a hundred ways — fine silk, beautiful rooms, soft carpets, grand gatherings — and still feel a quiet ache underneath it all, especially when pride runs the show. Even pleasure can feel heavy when the inside is empty.

Enjoy the beauty of life, and remember what holds you up when everything else fades. Nanak says the Naam is what sets you free in the end. Keep it close — it stays with you all the way.

Decorate your life if you like, but do not forget to fill it.
The deeper layer

A decorated outside needs the Naam inside.

Garh kaa-i-aa seegaar baho bhaaNt banaa-ee — the fortress of the body is decorated in many ways, with silk robes of every color and courts laid with red and white carpets. Dukh khaanaa dukh bhognaa garbai garbaa-ee — when pride runs the show, even eating and enjoying taste of pain. Naam na chayti-o ant la-ay chhadaa-ee — the Naam is what frees a person at the end, so remember it now.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel good on the inside, not just look good on the outside?
