Held Close, Made New

Shalok, Third Mehl:
sehjay sukh sutee sabad samaa-ay.
She sleeps in intuitive peace and poise, absorbed in the Word of the Shabad.
aapay parabh mayl la-ee gal laa-ay.
God hugs her close in His Embrace, and merges her into Himself.
dubiDhaa chookee sahj subhaa-ay.
Duality is eradicated with intuitive ease.
antar naam vasi-aa man aa-ay.
The Naam comes to abide in her mind.
say kanth laa-ay je bhann gharhaa-ay.
He hugs close in His Embrace those who shatter and reform their beings.
naanak jo Dhur milay say hun aan milaa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, those who are predestined to meet Him, come and meet Him now. ||1||

In plain words

Imagine resting in a peace so complete that you sleep easy, held in the Shabad. The One hugs you close. When your heart settles like that, the sense of being split in two dissolves, and the Naam comes to live quietly inside you.

The One holds close those who let their old self be broken down and remade. You do not have to stay exactly as you are. You can be reshaped, gently, into something more whole. Nanak says those meant to meet the One from the very beginning are brought to meet now.

You can let your old self be remade — and be held close in the process.
The deeper layer

The One holds close the heart that lets itself be remade.

Sehjay sukh sutee sabad samaa-ay — she sleeps in easy peace, absorbed in the Shabad. The soul here is pictured as a bride, and the picture fits any heart that belongs to the One. Aapay prabh mayl la-ee gal laa-ay — the One hugs her close. Dubidhaa chookee — being split in two is over, and the Naam comes to live in the mind. Bhann gharhaa-ay — those who let themselves be broken and reshaped are held close, the way a potter reworks clay into a better pot. Dhur milay say hun aan milaa-ay — those meant to meet from the start meet now.

A Question to Sit With

What is one old habit you would be willing to let break, to become more yourself?
