mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
jinHee naam visaari-aa ki-aa jap jaapeh hor.
Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord - so what if they chant other chants?
bistaa andar keet say muthay DhanDhai chor.
They are maggots in manure, plundered by the thief of worldly entanglements.
naanak naam na veesrai jhoothay laalach hor. ||2||
O Nanak, never forget the Naam; greed for anything else is false. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
When we forget the Naam and chase everything else instead, we can get so tangled in our busy days and our wanting that we lose ourselves in them. The rush for more quietly robs us of what we already had.
Nanak says: never forget the Naam, the living sense of the One. Chasing after other things to fill the gap always turns out empty. The thing that lasts was here the whole time.
The thing that lasts is already yours — do not trade it away for things that do not.
Shalok, Third Mehl. Endless worldly business (dhandhaa) is pictured as a thief (chor) that robs the heart while we are busy. naam na veesrai: never forget the Naam; every other greed is jhooth (false, passing).
