O Nanak, will be bound and gagged and beaten in the City of Death, like the thief caught red-handed. ||1||

In plain words

Sometimes we get so busy doing all sorts of other things that we push aside the one thing that quietly holds it all together. When the Name slips out of the center of a life, everything else starts to feel scattered and off-balance.

Nanak says: keep the Naam at the heart of your days. Let the living sense of the One stay near, and the rest of life arranges itself around something steady.

Keep what matters most at the center, and the rest falls into place.
The deeper layer

Shalok, Third Mehl. naam visaar karam karahi hor — forgetting the Naam and filling the day with other work. A life that loses its centre feels caught and held, like someone stuck with nowhere to turn. The Naam at the centre sets it free.

A Question to Sit With

What is the one thing you most want to keep at the center of your life?
