How Life Keeps Turning

ਹਸਤੋ ਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਰੋਵਤੁ ਆਵੈ ਰੋਵਤੁ ਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਹਸੈ ॥
hasto jaa-ay so rovat aavai rovat jaa-ay so hasai.
The one who goes laughing returns crying, and the one who goes crying returns laughing.
ਬਸਤੋ ਹੋਇ ਹੋਇ ਸੋੁ ਊਜਰੁ ਊਜਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਬਸੈ ॥੧॥
basto ho-ay ho-ay so oojar oojar ho-ay so basai. ||1||
What is inhabited becomes deserted, and what is deserted becomes inhabited. ||1||

In plain words

Life turns and turns. The one who leaves laughing comes back in tears, and the one who left crying comes back smiling.

A busy, crowded place empties out, and an empty place fills up again.

Every state you are in is passing into another.
The deeper layer

Life keeps turning, so no single moment stays forever.

Here Kabir begins a long list of things that flip. The one who leaves laughing comes back crying. The one who leaves crying comes back laughing.

A busy place goes quiet and empty. An empty place fills with people again.

Think of a playground. In the morning it is empty. At recess it is packed and loud. By evening it is empty again.

Kabir is not trying to scare anyone. He wants us to loosen our grip on any one moment, good or bad, because it will change.

A Question to Sit With

What is a hard time in your life that later turned into something good?
