Verse 3 of 5

Everything Shifts Its Shape

ਜਲ ਤੇ ਥਲ ਕਰਿ ਥਲ ਤੇ ਕੂਆ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥
jal tay thal kar thal tay koo-aa koop tay mayr karaavai.
The water turns into a desert, the desert turns into a well, and the well turns into a mountain.
ਧਰਤੀ ਤੇ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਚਢਾਵੈ ਚਢੇ ਅਕਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਵੈ ॥੨॥
Dhartee tay aakaas chadhaavai chadhay akaas giraavai. ||2||
From the earth, the mortal is exalted to the Akaashic ethers; and from the ethers on high, he is thrown down again. ||2||

In plain words

Water becomes dry land, dry land becomes a well, a well becomes a mountain.

Someone is lifted as high as the sky, then set gently back down on the ground. Everything shifts its shape.

Highs and lows are the same shifting landscape.
The deeper layer

Even land and sky can trade places in this changing world.

Kabir's pictures get bigger. Water turns into dry land. Dry land turns into a well. A well turns into a mountain.

Then he goes up and down. Someone is lifted high into the sky, then brought back down to the ground.

Think of sand at the beach. The waves build a hill, then wash it flat, then build it again.

Kabir treats big rises and falls like ordinary weather. They are part of a world that is always changing, not a punishment.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady when things around you keep changing?
