Verse 3 of 3

My Heart in the One's Hands

ਸਿਆਮ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਤਜਿ ਆਨ ਜੁ ਚਾਹਤ ਜਿਉ ਕੁਸਟੀ ਤਨਿ ਜੋਕ ॥
si-aam sundar taj aan jo chaahat ji-o kustee tan jok.
But one who forsakes the elegantly beautiful Lord, and harbors desire for anything else, is like a leech on the body of a leper.
ਸੂਰਦਾਸ ਮਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਹਥਿ ਲੀਨੋ ਦੀਨੋ ਇਹੁ ਪਰਲੋਕ ॥੨॥੧॥੮॥
soordaas man parabh hath leeno deeno ih parlok. ||2||1||8||
Says Sur Daas, God has taken my mind in His Hands. He has blessed me with the world beyond. ||2||1||8||

In plain words

To turn away from that beauty and chase after lesser things only leaves you emptier, never full.

Sur Daas says: the One has taken my heart into its own hands, and given me the world beyond, more than any world here could hold.

Chasing lesser things than the One only leaves you emptier.
The deeper layer

Chasing smaller things instead of the One leaves you emptier, never full.

The first line uses a strong, harsh picture from long ago: a leech clinging to a sick body. Its point is simple. Turning away from the beautiful One to want other things only drains you.

Think of drinking soda when you are really thirsty. It seems to help for a moment, but soon you are thirstier than before.

Then Sur Daas ends with joy. "Soordaas man prabh hath leeno" means the One has taken his heart into its own hands. And he has been given the world beyond, more than any world here could hold.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you chased that never quite satisfied you?
